Cleaning – Distilling – Converting: in refineries these three processes are utilized to produce the main products from crude oil, whereby the majority of the production is diesel, domestic fuel oil and gasolines. Several Byproducts with different profiles account for the remaining portion. Overall, a manufacturing plant consists of numerous different sections and equipment: crude oil tanks, piping with valves and fittings, pumps, turbines, nozzles, compressors and ejectors, furnaces, kilns and reactors, columns and towers, separators, containers and reservoirs, cooling units, heat exchanger and vaporizer, the flare stack, process control systems as well as tanks for the temporary storage of the semi-finished and finished products. The formation of hazardous gases is present virtually everywhere in such a sophisticated and complex entity. Therefore it is particularly important to monitor potential leakage points. The danger of leaks exists primarily on flanges with seals, enclosed compressors and sealed pumps, LPG storage and filling sites, desulfurization facilities as well as water-processing and treatment units. At the same time, escaping gases must be prevented from reaching critical sites such as hot places, e.g. hydrocrackers or furnaces and kilns.
The greatest threat for man, environment and equipment would be an explosion. When concentrations exceed a preset LEL, Dräger´s gas monitoring, detection and warning systems issue an alarm, which can then be coupled with devices that are automatically activated, e.g. the closing of magnetic valves or the activating of cooling showers or sprinkler systems, etc.
Even small leaks – possibly caused by hairline cracks and crazes – can reliably be detected by Dräger gas measuring devices and instruments, that are equipped with highly sensitive and low maintenance sensors. These sensors can be used to detect very low concentrations, thus preventing costly long term volume losses and informing of any possible critical status before it escalates.
